Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens - better popularly referred to as Queen Latifah, is an American performer, actress and acrobat. Her work as Queen Latifah on television, film and music has won her several prizes. They include a Golden Globe Award two Screen Actors Guild Awards Two Image Awards A Grammy Award Additional Grammy Nominations An Emmy Award Nomination and an Academy Award. Queen Latifah was born in Newark, New Jersey. Her parents are Rita Owens Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. The couple divorced when Latifah was age of 10. Latifah was raised in the Baptist church, and attended Catholic schools in Newark New Jersey. In her early twenties when her mother gave her the stage name Latifah that means gentle and loving in Arabic. Latifah is who was 5'10" tall power forward for her high school team was always a tall girl. She sang "Home" from The Wiz in a performance at her highschool. Latifah began her career as a beatboxer with the Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah is among the first members of Flavor Unit, which was at the time a group of MCs around DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King recorded the rap of Queen Latifah, aka Princess of the Posse. He sent the recording to Yo! MTV Raps is Freddy. The song got the attention from Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who signed Latifah and, in 1988, released her first single Wrath of My Madness.
